Justine – June 2020

As we rounded the bend and drove into Walhalla we spotted Stringers Cottage and were both astonished and delighted.
The cottage is basic but has everything you need. It has one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in and it was so cosy. The fire warmed the cottage w and the kitchen was well equipped with a little fridge, cooking implements, a kettle and even a coffee pot. The only thing we missed was a toaster but it’s pretty tricky to run a toaster on 12v power. The shower/bathroom /toilet was simple but definitely enough. It really took us back to basics and reminded us how little we need to be comfortable and happy. It was perfect.
We ate at the ‘Wally Pub” the first night and the food was so good we returned for dinner on the second night. It is essential to book though. They were busy both nights we were there, so we were glad we had booked ahead. Really delicious food and a true country pub feel.

We loved Walhalla and relished the opportunity to switch off from the busy last few months we’ve both had. No tv was a treat. Lots of books in the cottage but we took our own and read and slept and walked A LOT!  Take a Bluetooth speaker if you want some music. A newish phone tower nearby meant we had good reception (which was good to know when leaving kids at home) but at times I wished it wasn’t there so we could truly switch off.

The general store in town is shut (and for sale) so it’s essential you take your own food and drink supplies. Moe is around 45 mins away so returning to town for supplies would be a pain.

The steps down to Stringer’s Cottage are quite steep and slippery when wet. Be careful. You can park at the bottom (near the Coach house) but have to walk past the Coach house so need to limit that as much as possible. We recommend taking a torch.

The cottage is 12 V which is enough for almost everything and it has 2 x 240v power points you can use to charge small items like phones or cameras.
Extra blankets and hot water bottles are supplied so we definitely were warm enough. The cottage has one deep step inside it from the kitchen to the bed/sitting area so it’s not ideal for those with mobility issues.

The train wasn’t running the days we were there which was disappointing but gives us a reason to return.
We loved Stringers Cottage and hope to return in Spring or Autumn to see the town in another season. Thanks for having us Anna
